Posterior Tibialis Tendonitis
Definition
Overuse injury from excessive stress on the tendon due to increased mileage on hard surfaces and over pronation (rolling in of the foot and decreased arch). The posterior tibialis muscle is responsible for controlling the deceleration of pronation when your heel hits the ground as you run and helps to stabilizes the ankle.
Symptoms
Pain on the inside of the ankle bone and/or difficulty rising up onto toes.
Causes
Change in workout, improper footwear, running on hard surfaces, low arches or flat feet.
Treatment and Prevention
Walking boot early on to decrease the stress and pressure when weight-bearing, arch supports and proper orthotics for those with flat feet, activity modification, ultrasound to the tendon to decrease inflammation.
- Heel raises
- Ankle theraband resisted exercise
- Balance and proprioception exercises
